Handy Tips for Green Campers
Do you want to offset your carbon footprint? Check out this website to help the planet! www.carbonfund.org.
Preparing for Live Oak:
- Buy locally- and organically-grown food.
- Cut down on packaging by buying your fruit and vegetables loose.
- Avoid buying over-packaged goods and individual portion packs.
- Buy recycled goods and those packaged in recycled materials.
- Buy durable products, returnable bottles and containers that can be re-filled.
- Re-pack food into re-sealable containers to minimize waste on site.
Getting to Live Oak:
- Carpool if you can! Use the Live Oak Message Board to connect with carpool partners who live near you.
- If you carpool with three or more people to the festival, you will receive a raffle ticket at the front gate to win sustainable prizes. Bring your raffle ticket to the Sustainability Booth in the vendor area to be entered into the drawing. Each evening of the festival there will be winners drawn, so make sure you pick up your prize before you leave!

- If you are coming from outside the San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara areas, consider traveling to SLO or SB by Amtrak train or Greyhound bus and carpooling from there (see above).
At Live Oak:
- Move your car to the remote parking area to free up shady spots for people and ice chests. Using less ice = using less energy!
- Take short showers and use biodegradable soaps.
- Turn off faucets and showers when finished.
- Use rechargeable batteries, or better yet, hand-cranked flashlights and radios!
- Don't buy or use disposable plates, utensils, etc. Bring washable tableware and wash it with biodegradable dish soap.
- Bring cloth napkins and dish towels from home rather than using paper napkins and towels.
- Carry a refillable water bottle with you, so you don't have to buy bottled water.
- Buy fair-trade and organic foods and drinks that are packaged responsibly from our vendors. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts to help make Live Oak more sustainable!
- Don't litter -- use the bins provided for landfill waste (trash), recyclables, and compost.
- Keep your campsite tidy -- don't let trash and recyclables accumulate.
- Pack food away so animals can't get it.
Going Home:
- Again, carpool, if possible.
- Deposit all of your trash, recyclables, and compost into the appropriate bins. Please keep up with this throughout the weekend, so the trash crew volunteers won't have such a mountain of waste to deal with at the end of the festival.
- Take home everything that you brought with you -- pack it in, pack it out!
- The number of people camping at Live Oak has a tremendous impact on the local flora and fauna. Please do your best to minimize your 'footprint' and leave your camp site in better condition than you found it.
