Growing up in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood, this activist and educator started her career at age 7, playing trumpet and percussion in her family’s conjunto band. Now reggaeton singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Cecilia Peña-Govea performs her signature mix of Latin rhythms and San Francisco hip hop under the name La Doña, encapsulating various musical genres to express who she is. She coined the term “Femmeton” to describe her reggaeton tunes with a feminist perspective, featuring songs about love, gentrification, and what she calls “the radical joys of being a queer brown woman in the Bay Area.” La Doña has won accolades for eclectic, fresh, urgent songs described by New York Times Magazine as “songs that matter now.”
